The EOF Experience

I remember graduating high school like it was yesterday. The feeling of success and achievement flew through my body. I freaked out and realized I was done with high school, and I was still confused about what was next. Luckily I heard about a program called the Educational Opportunity Fund. EOF is a state funded program that supports first generation college students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. They provide financial aid, individual and group advising, workshops, experiential learning, and leadership opportunities to all students enrolled in this comprehensive program. EOF helped me in so many ways with preparing for my success in college.

I was able to take courses with students who were also new to the college experience which made the experience easier and more comfortable. I was also able to attend workshops that addressed issues that would help me progress in the future, such as opening up a bank account, how to file taxes, and why it’s so important to save while you’re young! Joining EOF was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and it will be yours too!

Transitioning from high school to college can be extremely tough. Coping with school work and financial challenges while attending school can make it impossible to stay focused. If it were not for the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) at Camden County College, I would have fallen into the cycle of feeling lost and out of place at college. EOF presented opportunities for me and my peers that helped us network and familiarize ourselves with the college culture. Members of the EOF program here at CCC have become a family to me. I still contact them to this day after leaving a few years ago. Once you join EOF, you are part of a new family that seeks nothing but the best for you.

The Educational Opportunity Fund has been a part of my educational journey for over 20 years. When I first entered Rutgers at 18, the EOF advisors helped me see that I had the ability to move forward and not just survive but thrive. Even though I had to leave Rutgers abruptly, my advisors at Rutgers and Camden County College welcomed me back with open arms and helped me through my educational and personal journey. The advisors listened to me, and they helped me see situations through a different lens. The advisors pushed me when I felt like giving up, and talked to me when I did not want to listen. They guided me and helped me seek additional resources for my success. The workshops offered by EOF exposed me to valuable information. Even after my educational journey concluded with graduation, EOF has given me the opportunity to pay it forward. I have been blessed to be the Vice President of the EOF Alumni Association at Rutgers Camden. I have served in this position for five years by interviewing potential EOF students, and providing information to perspective parents about the EOF experience. I will always hold a torch for EOF.
