Cream Scholarship Fund Established at Camden County College
More than $100,000 has been given to the Camden County College Foundation to establish the Riletta L. Cream Scholarship Fund.
A previous incarnation, the R.L. Cream Scholarship Fund Inc., was created in 1988 in the name of the now-retired Camden High School principal and Camden County freeholder, whose personal philosophy is that “where there is education, there is power.” That fund provided $1,000 college scholarships to graduates of each of the public high schools in the City of Camden. The assets of that fund have been moved under the administration of the Foundation and will now be used to provide scholarships to graduates of high schools throughout Camden County who are attending the College.
This is one of the largest contributions ever received by the Foundation. The decision to expand the scope of her namesake philanthropic endeavor was made by Cream herself.
From 1948 to 1972, Cream served as a teacher, a supervisor and an elementary school principal in the City of Camden. She then became the principal of her alma mater, Camden High School, a position that she held until 1987.
After becoming a member of the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1994 and until her retirement from the Board last year, Cream served as the county education liaison. She oversaw the College, Camden County Technical Schools, the Office of the Camden County Superintendent of Schools, the Camden County Library System and the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
In addition to attending most of the College’s graduation ceremonies during her years as a freeholder, Cream delivered the commencement keynote address in 2003. She received an honorary associate degree from CCC during the 2011 ceremony.
The Camden County College Foundation secures and manages private gifts that are used to benefit CCC students and programs. The Foundation also encourages the involvement and the financial commitment of alumni, friends and CCC employees in support of the College’s mission to serve the citizens of Camden County and beyond.
